A chat assistant answers. An agent acts. It can open web pages, read and edit files, fill in forms, work through a list of steps and sometimes keep going in the background while you do something else. Most major tools now include some version of this under names like agent mode, deep research, computer use, or named agents such as Researcher and Analyst in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
